when you make spaghetti do you have a large bowl or you break them?
If you put the pasta in whole and stir, you'll feel the bottom of the strands of the pasta start to soften, so you really could boil the noodles whole if you wanted, just keep stirring until all the noodles are soft enough to be under water and then boil until al dente. It's a matter of preference though.
