Does anyone have an explanation phenomenenon a perception in which the same portion of a road is different?
When you traveling by car on the roads there are some familiar places, usually near junctions, where I can switch in my mind between two perceptions of the scene. It is virtually impossible to put into words what the difference is, beyond a slight emotional trace. It reminds me most of these visual illusions (the vase, the two women on the stairs) where you can switch between the two perceptions of the same image. Could it be that I am accessing two different memory that were planned for 1) I saw this stretch of road, and 2) when I saw him, at some level thought it was my first glance and thus provided a second memory with the inevitable different flavor. Trouble with that is why two and only two versions, why not three?
I get this sometimes myself, usually when I'm very tired. I also experience it in the way I perceive directions. North is north, but sometimes it's a totally different north. I know what you're talking about, and yes, it is difficult to explain the concept to others.
