differences in newsprint paper and erasers for art?
I'm currently waitlisted for a beginning art class. I need to get supplies and was wondering the differences between a few of the supplies and what is recommended to use..
Newsprint paper: rough or smooth?
Erasers for different papers: kneaded eraser, pink pearl eraser, staedtler plastic eraser?
Newsprint is typically used for rapid sketching, drafts, and things that are not normally "finished" pieces. It is also a suitable paper to use to experiment different drawing tools such as pencil or charcoal for drawings that you will probably end up throwing away. I normally go with a rough surfaced newsprint because it holds charcoal a little better, but at the same time, the paper is soft enough that you get clean lines if you decided to use a marker or ball-point pen.
All the erasers listed have different properties that I think just comes down to preference, I think. Pink erasers are durable and erase well. There downside is that they are more abrasive and will tear up the surface of paper more easily than others. Over time too, I've noticed they get hard and just end up smearing things.
Kneaded erasers are pliable and you can mold them to certain shapes. You can use them to rub or dab at drawings, but I think they are less effective as rubbing erasers. They also tend to get dirty since the medium you erase tends to just collect in the eraser itself.
Personally I prefer the white plastic eraser. It erases well, and is pretty gentle on paper when rubbing. Nothing is more aggravating then when you are working very hard on a drawing and you ruin it because the eraser either leaves a discolored smudge on your drawing or you tear the paper because its too rough.
Aside from erasers I almost always use a dusting brush after I'm done to avoid using my hands and leaving fingerprints and smudges, particularly if its in graphite/pencil.
