Does anyone know how the Rose, Orange, Fiesta, and Sugar Bowls were selected to be the only 4 BCS Bowls?
The BCS bowls came out of the Bowl Coalition which was the forerunner of the BCS.
And also it came of the conference tie-ins. Before the BCS and Bowl Coalition the following "Major Bowls" had these tie-ins:
Rose: Pac-10 and Big 10
Sugar: SEC
Orange: Big 8
Cotton: Southwest
Fiesta: No tie-end
The Southwest broke up after the 1995 season and it made the Cotton Bowl not a major player.
That same year the Bowl Coalition became the Bowl Alliance with the Orange, Fiesta, Sugar and five conferences (SEC, Big 8, Southwest, ACC and Big East) and was reduced to four conferences in 1996 (since the Southwest was no longer)
In 1998 the Bowl Alliance became the BCS after the Rose Bowl allowed to release either the PAC-10 and Big 10 team if they were playing in the BCS National Championship game which was rotated among the four Bowls that you mentioned.
