Why doesn't rust occur when there is no air present?
I am doing a science project, where i have two test tubes (or shot glasses), and I fill them both up with water, and put some nails in them. But in one of the 'test tubes' i have Vaseline and oil covering the top to trap all the air out. Rust is not supposed to happen to the Vaseline 'test tube'. Why is this?

Rust is the product of the metal being oxidised.
Metal + oxygen ---> Metal oxide
example with iron:
2Fe + 02 ---> 2FeO
So if the oxygen can't come into contact with the metal surface, the reaction can't take place.
