Would this be a unique college essay topic?
So I have been wearing glasses practically my entire life. I was wondering if I wrote an essay about how life is looking through a piece of glass every minute of everyday would be a unique idea?
Well, that could work, or it could be a real clunker. Depends on how you execute it, really.
I don't think there's much of a plot to this story. It's not that great a vehicle for explaining how you meet challenges--in the great scheme of things, correctable myopia or astigmatism isn't that great a burden. Still, it's a different experience: chromatic aberration, the way the seam between the wall and the ceiling seems curved, the way the ends of steps curve up to meet you as you climb. There's a possibility for some vivid descriptions. And you could connect that to a metaphor about how some people don't wear glasses, but they filter everything they see through the lens of their own experience and opinions.
I think such an essay would be most successful if you were able to showcase a unique and original voice, if you are a strong writer. I'm thinking of stories in The New Yorker, stories told on the Moth podcasts, or This American Life. Sometimes they take something really inconsequential and end up making a deep statement about the human condition with it.
