Which country produces the finest quality cut glass; I need to impress the mother in law who is coming round?
to dinner, she's a wine connoisseur, and she's French. My local store sells Austrian and Slovakian wine glasses, which should I choose?
Austrian glass traditionally has more "snob appeal", but Slovakian glass is considered a good value ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080412151115AALBUO4 ).

Also, you should focus on how the wine itself fits into the dinner. Is the wine(s) you're serving an apertivo, good with light foods, good with heavy foods, a dessert? Should it be chilled?
If you're not sure, buy from a shop that has a large wine section. These days, even supermarkets have helpful literature displayed next to the wines. If not, seek a knowledgible employee.
Concerning the particular wines you serve, why not ask your husband what his mother likes? If you can't keep track of all the brands, just think in these catagories: sweet or dry, and white or red. And if you can't afford anything connoisseur-like, Trader Joe's has some nice Australian wines for less than $10 a bottle. (not that your mother-in-law has to know it was $10)
Also, find out what your mother-in-law likes to eat! She'll be far more impressed by the fact that you made her favorite food, than by the plate it's being served on.
As a hostess, just be responsive to your guest's needs.
