Do people with synesthesia experience the same paralells with two given senses, or are they unique to each?
For example, will blue correspond to the number 5 in everybody? Red 3? Will spicy food always taste like a triangle for everybody? Or are all these associations unique (though consistent) for each person? Whichever way it is, why is this so? If you have references, that would be cool, too, but however much explanation you can give me would be great.
No, synesthetics uniquely associate stimuli. This can simply be rooted in the very way that synesthetics associate stimuli -- they usually pair concept with the experience. As this is the case, it only stands logic that each synesthetic would experience associations in a unique fashion.
For example, having known a couple synesthetic people, one told me that the number 6 was always green. Another said the number 6 is "scary", saying it is a large, intimidating number.
As our memories are associated uniquely, they associate uniquely with stimuli and concepts such as numbers.
