"The White House midsession budget forecast and the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office both forecast that government revenues will be crimped by a slow recovery from the worst recession since the 1930s Great Depression, while spending on retirement and medical benefits soars."
Obama believes that the cost of health care is dragging down our economy and affecting the lives of our citizens by rising premiums, and denying coverage to people with existing health conditions. There is also a large number of uninsured who use the emergency rooms of hospitals for their care, and all of us are paying for that. On the campaign trail, he heard enough storiies of middle-class Americans that, when losing their jobs, lost their health care as well. One catastrophic illness like cancer (even for the insured) and you can lose everything you have worked for all of your life. Republicans also agree that something has to be done and, of course, the argument is on how to fix it. Whether this was the time to take on this enormous task can be debated but I think all agree that we cannot wait another 10 years to tackle this problem. Obviously, our rising debt is frightening to the American people since we have always known prosperity.
We can also debate whether the outcries at Town Hall meetings are legitimate citizens voicing their concerns or political operatives, but comments like "pulling the plug on granny" and "death panels" coming from the Republican camp has terrified our senior citizens. While these actions are despicable, the turmoil has prevented genuine dialogue about what this plan is about; consequently, we are getting the facts in dribbs and drabs.
We are in a very troubled time in our country, and it's time for both Democrats and Republicans to fix our problems together--not fight each other. It was Lincoln that said, "A house divided will fall." Will the Republicans put rancor aside and work to help the American people? Not just to march in lockstep with Democrats, but to reach across the aisle and put forth some logical solutions for the benefit of our country. It's obvious to me that the road to regaining the White House for Republicans is to earn the respect and admiration of the people again by acting honorably. Republicans talk much about God and country and patriotism, but their actions since Obama's election have been shameful. It's time to call for the end of the hateful rhetoric of Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, O'Reilly and Coulter. Republicans are better than that. They are the party of Lincoln. How much more successful they would be by acting with distinction and honor to make up for the debacle of the last 8 years by working hard for our people and the constituencies they represent. I hope and pray this will be the case.
