I have a albino budgie. The cere is pink with white nostrils. Can I sex it or is it a sign of a young bird?
The base of the cere looks pink. But has a lot of white in and around the nostrils.
You are very perceptive, and from your description of the cere having lots of white in and around the nares (nostrils), I would say you have a female. An albino hen's cere will tend to turn more brownish though when she goes into breeding condition.
Albino budgies are very difficult to sex by the color of the cere because of the lack of pigment since the male ceres don't usually turn the usual blue-lavender color that you find on other males. I find this to be a problem with lutinos and other light colored mutations as well such as the cinnamons which tend to have a darker red eye and only light pigmentation on the cere.
The most budgies I ever bred in one year was about 125 and I've noticed a few things with the fledlings. With the ones whose cere's are not really a definite blue or beige but more of a lavender, I look at the nares and find that the hens have (as you mentioned) a lot of white right close to the openings of the nares. I also notice that when you handle them, the hens most definitely BITE harder and HANG ON more than the males.
Another way I've been able to make a reasonably good call regarding the sex of (ALL) parrots (not just budgies), is when I'm clipping toenails, most males tend to ball their toes up into a little fist and its very difficult to straighten the toe out in order to clip it! The females don't seem to have the same amount of strength in the feet and toes as the males.
So, if you have other budgies or know of someone who does, try using one of the above comparisons on other budgies to make your best judgment call.
