What are the temp requirements for a ball python?

We're using a 60 watt red bulb, and the warm side of the tank stays in the 80s. Is that too cold?

Ball pythons are tropical animals and are most comfortable in temperatures ranging from 77-86 F. I hope the bulb you are using is in a reflector outside the cage as the snake can get burned if it comes in contact with the bulb. Since they are constrictors, it has been reported that pythons have been killed and houses burned down when they decide to snuggle up and squeeze a light bulb for warmth. The bulb breaks and sets the bedding on fire!

Your set up should have the heat source on one end of the enclosure, a rock and/or branch for the snake to bask on and rub off its old skin when it sheds, and enough room for the snake to go to the other end of the enclosure if it gets too warm. Also include a large water bowl in the cool end of the enclosure because these snakes like to bath occasionally, and a box or half pipe hiding place when the snake wants to have some privacy.

Check your local library and or pet stores. There are many good reference books on ball pythons. If you take care of your pet, it will live many years.
