Are churches justified to spend money on themselves?
Wouldn't money be better spent on poor and needy people?
Some churches are absolutely magnificent looking but what good is all that beauty just sitting there doing, the art, stain glass windows, ornaments, statues etc. All very expensive.
Does it say in any bibles that God wants people to gather in buildings like this?
If people have faith and believe that God is everywhere then won't a plain wooden building be ok for a community gathering?
In the Old Testament there are many pages of detailed descriptions of exactly how the lavish temple should be build, and also, many testimonies to it's carefully polished splendor, after construction. The weights of the gold and silver used in the construction of it are mentioned. The taxes imposed on, and offerings demanded of, the common people are mentioned. The wars fought and alliances made, in order to secure this gold and silver, are mentioned. When the first temple was destroyed, the Israelites built a second glorious temple, which was also later destroyed. And so forth and so on. All of this can and has been used by later Christian churches, to justify their own expensive churches. All the glory, they say, belongs to the God of Abraham, who demands worship and praise from all His followers, and commands destruction for those who fail to follow His ways, His laws, and His commands, as given through human Prophets, and carried out by human Priests.
